Transport

London is one of the most well-connected cities in the world with some of the best public transport systems available; but it can all be a bit overwhelming and confusing the first time you use them.

    Transport for London

Transport for London (TfL) is the official body responsible for managing the capital’s transport network. It oversees the London Underground, buses, trams, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), London Overground, and even cycle hire schemes. TfL ensures safe, efficient, and accessible travel across the city, integrating different modes of transport with contactless payments and the Oyster card system. Whether you’re commuting, sightseeing, or just getting around, TfL makes navigating London easy and convenient.

    Uber RideShare and Transit

Ride-hail services like Uber provide a flexible and modern way to navigate London. With the ability to request a ride through a smartphone app, travelers can enjoy the convenience of being picked up where they are and dropped off at their desired location. This option is particularly useful for people unfamiliar with the city or those traveling late at night. While it may not always be the most economical choice, it offers a level of convenience that many people find appealing. In some parts of London, the Uber app will also guide you through TfL transport options.

    CityMapper

Citymapper is a popular travel app designed to make navigating cities like London simple and efficient. It provides real-time journey planning across multiple transport options, including the Tube, buses, cycling, walking, and even ride-sharing services. With live updates, step-by-step directions, and alternative routes, Citymapper helps users find the fastest and most convenient way to get around. Whether you’re a commuter or a visitor, the app ensures you stay informed and move through the city with ease.

    GreaterAnglia

Any journey to Bethel will take you outside of the London travel zone. At least part of your journey will not be covered by any TfL travel pass or ticket, but the CityMapper app will still guide you through the whole of your journey. While London's newest train line, the Elizabeth Line, can take you as far as Brentwood or Shenfield, you will likely be guided to use a GreaterAnglia trains service to travel to either Chelmsford or Billericay before taking a public bus for the final part of your journey.

    FirstBus

The last part of your journey to Bethel (or the first part of your journey back) will likely include one or more of the number 300, X30 or C1 routes operated by FirstBus. The best way to pay for these bus journeys while ensuring you don't overspend is by contactless payment. Use the same card or phone for all journeys and Tap&Cap will ensure you don't spend more than £3 per journey or more than a day-pass in one day for any number of journeys.

Safety Note: While mobile apps and websites make travelling around London much easier, please be cautious about using your phone in public. There have been many cases reported of phones being snatched by thieves on scooters from unsuspecting individuals in the street. ideally, check your journey in a safe space such as a coffee shop so that you can put your phone away while in the street. If you must consult your phone in the street, use a phone harness, hold the phone firmly with both hands (one covering the top of the phone) and/or stand against a shop window or wall so that there is no space in front of you for anyone to pass and snatch.

Accommodation

London can be one of the most expensive cities to stay in; but there are cheaper options when you know where to look.

    General Advice

Look at areas that are further from the city centre but still near to public transport facilities and you can find much cheaper prices while still having easy and convenient access to all the places you want to visit. Hotels near major venues such as Wembley Stadium, O2 Arena and ExCeL cost more on event days, but often have excess spaces when there are no events and reduce their prices.
